Little Local - May 21

Hand over the afternoon to the kids, then catch up on local events, camps and Sprout Family Health.

Usually, the grown-ups make the plans: we choose the park, pack the snacks, decide when we’re leaving, and quietly manage the entire operation from start to finish. But what happens when the kids get to take the lead for a few hours?

This week, we’re talking about a Yes Afternoon. Also inside this issue: a free Biodiversity Day celebration in Saanich tomorrow, a note from Sprout Family Health, summer camp ideas, and lots of local events to add to your calendar. Have fun out there!

Plan a Yes Afternoon

Have your kids ever seen the movie Yes Day? Ours did, and naturally, they asked if we could have one. A whole day of saying yes felt… ambitious. But a Yes Afternoon? That I could get behind.

The idea is simple: you set a few clear boundaries, then let your kids lead for a little while.

You might say: “We have two hours, we can’t drive more than 30mins away, and we’re not buying toys, but you get to choose what we do.”

Maybe they ask to wear pajamas to the beach, eat ice cream before dinner, take the bus just because, build a fort in the living room, or bake a cake for no reason.

A few prompts to get them started:

Choose the place: beach, park, library, garden, playground, or neighbourhood walk.
Choose the snack: muffins, popcorn, smoothies, hot chocolate, or ice cream.
Choose the route: walk, bike, scooter, bus, or “take the long way.”
Choose the tiny adventure: collect petals, count dogs, throw rocks in the ocean, look for fairy doors, or eat dinner outside.

A Yes Afternoon works best when the limits are clear from the start:

“We can choose one treat.”
“We have two hours.”
“Everyone gets one choice.”
“Grown-ups can still say no to anything unsafe, too expensive, or too chaotic.”

Then follow their lead.

Sometimes that’s all it takes to make an ordinary afternoon feel like an adventure!

Sprout Family Health

Most healthcare is built for when something’s wrong. Sprout Family Health is designed to help you stay well.

You get direct access to a dedicated care team, longer visits, and support by phone, text, or booking when you need it, even if it’s just a quick question. Membership includes unlimited Nurse Practitioner visits plus access to physio, counselling, speech and language, OT, and parenting support, all in one place.

One of the newest additions is the Sprout Health Report Card, a clear, comprehensive annual snapshot of your health across sleep, nutrition, movement, mental health, and illness prevention. It’s built from your labs, body composition (DEXA), and other key markers, so you can see what’s changing and what small shifts could make a big difference over time.

With Sprout, you’ve got a caring team looking out for your whole family.

Mailbox Magic

Do you remember how exciting it felt to get something in the mail as a kid?

That’s the idea behind Little Local Crew, our seasonal snail mail package for Island kids. Each edition is a small envelope of local, seasonal fun: part mini guide, part activity pack, part little surprise.

The summer edition includes a letter from Alfie the Owl, a summer mini guide with activities, stickers, and maybe a couple of other surprises…designed to help kids notice the season and add a bit of magic to summer days.

It’s best suited for kids ages 3+ and designed with Vancouver Island families in mind.

Note: This is a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
