Little Local - June 4
A curious sea creature, Ocean Week fun, and family-friendly events around Victoria.

It’s Ocean Week here in Victoria, which feels like the perfect excuse to spend a little extra time near the water this weekend, or check out one of the many Ocean Week events happening around town.
On a recent trip to McKenzie Bight, we found a surprising sea creature that stopped us in our tracks and sent me down a little rabbit hole to learn more about this mysterious marine snail. I’m sharing that ocean find in this issue, along with lots of great Ocean Week and community events for the weekend.
Let’s dive in!

Meet the Moon Snail
I want to introduce you to one of the coolest creatures we’ve found recently while out at McKenzie Bight…the Moon Snail.
When the kids first spotted this enormous snail, I couldn’t believe the size of its foot. It looked almost too big for its shell.
Moon snails spend much of their time moving beneath the sand, hunting for clams and other shellfish. When a moon snail finds one, it uses its huge, soft foot to hold onto the shell, then slowly drills a nearly perfect round hole using a rough tongue-like tool called a radula, along with chemicals that help soften the shell. Those tiny round holes you sometimes find in empty clam shells? That may be the work of a moon snail.

Moon Snail Sand Collars
While beachcombing, we also found what looked like strange rubbery rings in the sand. I honestly thought they were pieces of garbage, but we learned they were actually moon snail egg cases, called sand collars! Female moon snails make them by mixing sand and mucus into a flexible collar shape, with thousands of tiny eggs hidden inside.
Watch this short video and share with your kids!

McKenzie Bight is a beautiful place to celebrate Ocean Week with the kids. Take the trail down through the forest to a rocky beach on Saanich Inlet, where there’s plenty of little things to notice at low tide. Just remember to look gently, leave living creatures where they are, and treat those odd rubbery “rings” as part of the beach, not litter.
✏️ Note: This was a fairly big walk for little legs. I’d recommend taking the route clockwise, so you head down the steps on the way to the beach and return up the sloping path on the way back. Yes, candy made an appearance to help everyone make it back to the car!

Last Call!
Just a quick reminder that I’m starting to send out the Summer Edition of our Crew Mail this week.
This summer edition includes a letter from Alfie, stickers, activities, and a few more goodies to help kids notice the season and make summer days feel a bit more special.
There are only a few days left to order before I close summer mail until fall.
